How does ChatGPT decide which lawyers to mention?

When ChatGPT searches the web, OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, is what surfaces websites, and OpenAI states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. Beyond access, which firm gets mentioned depends on what the sources it finds say, and answers vary from one conversation to the next.

Check access first

Look at your robots.txt and any security or hosting settings that block bots. OAI-SearchBot governs search; GPTBot relates to model training; ChatGPT-User covers actions a person asks ChatGPT to take. OpenAI says each setting works independently. Our answer on blocking AI crawlers walks through each one.

What helps a firm get named

OpenAI does not publish selection rules. From our testing, the firms that get named tend to have pages that state plainly who they help, what they handle, and where, with facts that match across their site, Google Business Profile, and directories. Treat that as a working hypothesis, and measure it.
