Where AI answers come from today
The line between search and AI is blurring from both sides. Google introduced AI Mode on March 5, 2025, as a Search Labs experiment for questions that need further exploration, comparisons, and reasoning. Its documentation on AI features and your website says both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a query fan-out technique, issuing several related searches across subtopics, and that a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear as a supporting link.
The standalone assistants also search. OpenAI says ChatGPT can search the web to answer questions with current information and links to relevant sources, and that it sometimes partners with other search providers. Perplexity says it searches the internet in real time and that each answer includes numbered citations to the original sources. In every case, a web page is still where the answer starts.
What that means for your firm
No one can say how the split between these tools will look in a few years, and any forecast is a guess. What is documented is that all of them reward the same thing: a page that can be reached, indexed, and quoted, and that answers a specific question accurately. Building for one tool and ignoring the others is a bet you do not need to make.
- Keep Google eligibleIndexed pages with snippets allowed. Google counts AI feature traffic inside the Web search type in Search Console.
- Keep the assistants' search crawlers openSee which AI crawlers a firm should allow.
- Answer the local questionA page that names your state's process is more useful to every one of these tools than a national overview. The North Carolina guide shows what that looks like.
Whether AI answers cost firms visits is a separate question, with the evidence laid out in whether AI Overviews reduce clicks to firm sites.

Common questions
Should my firm stop investing in Google?
No. Google's AI features link to pages that are indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in Google Search, so the work that keeps your pages eligible for Google results also keeps them eligible for its AI answers.
