Should a law firm have an FAQ page?

A short one can help readers, but it is rarely where a firm's best answers belong. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search on May 7, 2026, so an FAQ page no longer earns a special display. The questions clients ask usually do more on the practice-area pages they belong to, where each answer can name the state, the court, and the process.

What changed at Google

Google's documentation changelog records the steps. On September 14, 2023, Google said FAQ rich results would only be shown for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. On May 8, 2026, it added a deprecation notice saying the feature would no longer appear in Google Search starting May 7, 2026, and on June 15, 2026, it removed the documentation.

For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says no special schema.org markup is needed. Its structured data policies still apply to any markup you keep: it must be a true representation of the page and must not mark up content that is not visible to readers. More in whether schema helps in AI search.

Where client questions do more work

A question about how long a car accident claim takes, answered on a general FAQ page, has to stay general. The same question on the personal injury page for your state can name the deadline, the court, and the steps, which is the detail an assistant needs to quote you. That is the idea behind an answer-first practice-area page: questions as headings, each answered directly. Every answer is still a communication about your services, so the advertising rules apply to it like any other page.

When a firm FAQ still makes sense

Keep a short firm FAQ for questions that do not belong to one practice: how consultations work, how fees are structured, which offices you have, which languages your staff speak, what to bring to a first meeting. Keep each answer brief, and link to the practice page when a question needs more than a few sentences.

Common questions

Should we remove FAQPage markup now?

Google's changelog does not say it must be removed. It no longer produces a rich result, and Google's structured data policies still require markup to match what readers can see. If yours describes visible questions and answers accurately, there is no urgency; if it marks up text readers cannot see, fix that.
