Track the chain, one measure at a time
Each step from search to signed client has its own measure and its own source. Keep them apart, and never add them together.
- Impressions and rankingsFrom Google Search Console and dated rank checks. They show reach, not clients.
- AI citationsFrom dated question tests across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Mode.
- Website inquiriesFrom form records and call tracking, before anyone screens them.
- Qualified leads, consultations, and retained clientsFrom your intake records, calendar, and practice management system.
Our homepage shows all seven measures and where each comes from.
What search data can and cannot tell you
Google includes traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Web search type of the Search Console Performance report rather than as a separate line, and points to tools such as Google Analytics for tracking conversions and time on site. Search data shows reach. It does not show who retained you. For the visibility side, see how to run dated AI citation tests.
A simple ROI calculation
- Set a reporting period with a start and end date, long enough for your matters to move from inquiry to engagement.
- At intake, ask how each prospective client found you and record the page they arrived on.
- Count the retained clients traced to pages the work built or rewrote, and total their fees.
- Subtract the cost of the work, then divide by that cost.
Contingency practices need one more step. Fees arrive when a case resolves, so personal injury firms should report signed cases separately from fees collected in the period.

Common questions
How soon should a firm expect a return?
We do not promise a timeline. It depends on how quickly pages are crawled, how much competing content exists, and how long your matters take from inquiry to engagement. Dated reporting shows the trend.
Can AI citations count toward ROI?
Not on their own. A citation is a visibility measure. It becomes part of the return only when an inquiry traced to it turns into a retained client.
