This guide builds on the New Mexico guide, which covers Rules 16-701 and 16-702 and the State Bar's AI opinion. Here the focus is Bernalillo County: three court doors, and pages that send each reader to the right one.
Three courts, three different questions
| Court | What it hears | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Second Judicial District Court | Civil, criminal, family, and children's court matters | Bernalillo County Courthouse, 400 Lomas Blvd. NW; Children's Court at 5100 Second St. NW |
| Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court | Tort, contract, and landlord and tenant claims up to $10,000; misdemeanors, DWI, domestic violence, traffic; felony first appearances | 401 Lomas Blvd. NW |
| County probate court | Uncontested cases, including informal probate | Bernalillo County |
The Second Judicial District's location page lists the downtown courthouse and the Children's Court at the John E. Brown Juvenile Justice Center. The Metropolitan Court describes itself as a court of limited jurisdiction with jury trials.
Getting probate right
New Mexico has a probate court in each county, and each hears uncontested cases. When an estate is contested, it goes to district court. An Albuquerque estate page that says "probate court resolves will disputes" is wrong on the part readers care about most. Say which path is which, and name the Second Judicial District Court for contested matters.
The local search area
Albuquerque is not the only government in the county. The Bernalillo County Clerk certifies elections for both the City of Albuquerque and the Village of Tijeras, so a reader in the county may not live in the city at all. A Bernalillo County page that names the places you serve covers that without a page per name.
If you take clients from a neighboring county, that county has its own probate court and may sit in a different judicial district, so confirm the court before you name it.
What we build for Albuquerque firms
- Practice-area pages that name the district, metropolitan, or probate court each matter belongs in
- A Bernalillo County page that names the places you serve, split only where the content differs
- Answer posts for the questions Albuquerque clients ask before they call
The criminal defense guide matters here because DWI and other misdemeanors start in the Metropolitan Court, and the family law guide covers the district court's family matters. For what people ask right after an arrest, see the questions people put to AI after an arrest.
