Should law firms use video for AI search?

Video helps when it supports a page that already answers the question in text. Google's guidance on AI features lists supporting your textual content with high-quality images and videos, when applicable, among the practices that still apply. A video alone, with no written answer beside it, gives an AI answer little to quote.

What Google documents for video

Google's video SEO best practices, last updated December 18, 2025, set out what makes a video eligible for its video features:

  • A watch pageGoogle recommends a dedicated watch page for each video where that makes sense, with the video embedded on it and not hidden behind other elements.
  • Unique metadataEach watch page should have its own title and description, and structured data values such as name and description should be unique to each video.
  • A valid thumbnailGoogle says a video must have one to appear in video features.
  • Structured dataVideoObject markup requires a name, a thumbnail URL, and an upload date.

Where video fits for a firm

The written answer comes first. A two-minute video of an attorney explaining how a will contest works is most useful on the page that answers that question in text, where an assistant can quote the text and a reader can watch the attorney. From our work, publishing the spoken explanation as text on the page, whether as a summary or a transcript, gives the page more to quote. Treat that as a working hypothesis; Google's video guidance does not address transcripts.

Video is still advertising. A video about your services is a communication under your state's rules, so the claims in it need the same care as the page. Florida, for example, requires a clear and conspicuous disclaimer when an ad uses a dramatization, and its checklist says a firm's own video channel need not be filed unless posts are sponsored; see the Florida guide. Results and testimonials in video follow the rules in our answer on client testimonials.

Video tends to matter most where clients want to see who they are hiring, as in family law.

Common questions

Does a YouTube channel replace video on the firm's site?

Not for the page itself. Google's guidance centers on a watch page with the video embedded, so a video placed on the practice page that answers the same question keeps the text and the video together.
