What Google documents
Google's guidance on making links crawlable, last updated December 10, 2025, makes three practical points:
- Every page you care about should have a link from at least one other page on your siteAn orphaned county page or FAQ is easy to miss.
- Links must be real linksGoogle says it can only crawl a link that is an HTML anchor element with an href attribute, and that it cannot reliably extract URLs from elements without one. Menus built only on script events are worth checking.
- Anchor text should be descriptiveGoogle calls good anchor text descriptive, reasonably concise, and relevant to both pages, and suggests reading it alone to see whether it makes sense.
Google also says there is no ideal number of links per page, but that a page with too many probably has too many.
Why it matters more for AI answers
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue several related searches across subtopics to build one response. A firm whose estate planning page links to its probate, trust funding, and guardianship pages gives each of those subtopics a findable, focused page. From our work, the pattern that holds up is a hub page per practice that links to each question page once, and each question page that links back and to the one or two pages a reader needs next. Treat that as a working hypothesis to test on your own site.
The same thinking applies across locations. A state page that links to its county pages, and county pages that link to the right practice pages, tells crawlers how your site is organized. The estate planning guide shows a practice built this way, and what an answer-first practice page is covers the pages being linked.

Common questions
Does an llms.txt file replace internal links?
No. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files or AI text files to appear in its AI features. Clear internal links on the pages themselves are what its guidance names.
