This guide builds on the New York guide, which covers the state's amended advertising rules. Here the focus is the local market: one county with many municipal names, and a court map that depends on where a matter starts.
One county, many search terms
Erie County lists three cities: Buffalo, Lackawanna, and Tonawanda. Its towns include Amherst, Cheektowaga, Clarence, Grand Island, Hamburg, Lancaster, Orchard Park, Tonawanda, and West Seneca, and its villages include Depew, East Aurora, Kenmore, Williamsville, and Springville. People search with the name of the place they live.
Shared names are the local trap. Hamburg, Lancaster, Orchard Park, Alden, and North Collins are each both a town and a village, and Tonawanda is both a city and a town. A page that says "Tonawanda" without saying which one can point a reader to the wrong court.
Getting the local court facts right
The New York State court locator lists the Erie County Supreme Court and Erie County Court at 25 Delaware Avenue, the Erie County Surrogate's Court at 92 Franklin Street, 2nd floor, the Erie County Family Court at 1 Niagara Plaza, and Buffalo City Court at 50 Delaware Avenue, all in Buffalo. Lackawanna City Court and Tonawanda City Court sit in their own cities.
The Eighth Judicial District describes city courts as handling misdemeanors and lesser offenses and civil claims up to $15,000, and town and village courts as handling violations, misdemeanors, traffic infractions, and civil claims up to $3,000. A traffic or small claims page for Amherst and one for Buffalo should not name the same court. We check every court name and address against the court system's own pages before it goes on yours.
What differs from New York City
In the New York City market, the same matter type lands in a different county courthouse depending on the borough. In Buffalo, the court locator lists the main Erie County courts at Buffalo addresses, and the variation sits at the local level, in the city, town, and village courts. The Eighth Judicial District also covers seven other Western New York counties, so a firm serving Niagara or Chautauqua clients needs those counties named correctly, not an Erie County page with a new heading.
What we build for Buffalo firms
- Practice-area pages that name the right Erie County court for each matter
- An Erie County page set that names the towns and villages you serve, split only where the content differs
- Answer posts for the local questions clients ask before they call
The criminal defense guide covers the questions people ask after an arrest, and the family law guide covers custody and support questions that start in Family Court.
Common questions
Should I build a page for every town in Erie County?
Only where the page has something distinct to say. One strong Erie County page that names the towns and villages you serve is usually the better first step, with separate pages where a local court or client question differs.
How should a Buffalo firm handle places like Tonawanda that are both a city and a town?
Name the municipality precisely, such as "City of Tonawanda" or "Town of Tonawanda," and name the court that serves it. Our answer on why AI names competing firms explains why precise pages tend to be the ones quoted.
